Mt Oriel is a unique part of Australia's heritage. Construction of the existing homestead, from reinforced concrete, was begun in 1908 by the then owner George Henry Greene and finished in 1911. It was built over the top of, and incorporates the earlier single-storey brick building.

The property passed from George Henry Greene to his son William Pomeroy Crawford Greene in 1910, not long before George's death. Pomeroy sold it before moving to England in 1914, and it was run as a farm until sold to the Methodist Church. They opened it as a boys' reformatory in 1956. After this it was bought in almost derelict condition by David and Margaret Morris in 1975. Much time, money and effort was put in to restoration by the Morrises. David died in 2002, and his grave is in the churchyard adjoining the property. Since then it has been open to the public on a series of Open Days each year. Funds raised go towards the renovation of the buildings, which is an ongoing project. Although still privately owned by Margaret Morris, it is listed on the NSW Heritage database.
